Reverse Osmosis
High efficiency, ultra-high pressure RO pumps
The demand for fresh water is growing all over the world. Reverse osmosis is the process that separates salt and other contaminants from water and other fluids. Wanner™ Hydra-Cell® Pro pumps are used for numerous RO process applications, from producing drinking water, reducing waste stream volumes, to solvent/acid recovery or concentrating liquids such as fruit juices.
The most efficient reverse osmosis systems utilize high pressure (30-120 bar and above) pumps to purify or concentrate large volumes of liquids. On marine vessels and in remote areas of the world, where water comes directly from the ocean, it is essential that the reverse osmosis pump is reliable and easy to operate and maintain. With no cups, packing or seals, Hydra-Cell Pro pumps are ideally suited to deliver reliable, high-pressure seawater to the separation membranes of the reverse osmosis unit.
With no need for fine filtration, Hydra-Cell Pro pumps can reliably handle liquids with particles. Hydra-Cell Pro can run dry indefinitely without damage to the pump – the unique ADPC (Advanced Diaphragm Position Control) technology protects the diaphragms if the inlet to the pump is blocked or accidentally closed. Energy costs, a serious problem with many pumps on continuous duty, are held down by the high efficiency and low horsepower requirement of the Hydra-Cell pump.
Most of these features are equally relevant in the many industrial RO and Ultrafiltration systems where Hydra-Cell Pro pumps are used in process water recovery and in the treatment of liquid waste. With a wide range of materials of construction performance and cost can be maximized. Materials used in the process pump head can be upgraded making the Hydra-Cell Pro pump very adaptable. Seal-less design marks out the Hydra-Cell Pro from other RO pumps and is the basis of its long service life – many of the liquids pumped in waste streams are harmful to pump seals. The Hydra-Cell Pro is tolerant of small solids, resistant to chemical and corrosive attack.

Wanner Application Briefs
By deploying Wanner™ Hydra-Cell® Pro pumps, a large water purification company in India has increased the efficiency and reliability of its plant, and greatly improved throughput with 20 hours per day operation.
The plant, which the company was running for a pharmaceutical organization, previously had to slow or stop operations due to frequent leakages and a lack of reliability in critical pumps. Pumps would have to run at lower speeds and it was not uncommon to lose a day in downtime due to production interruptions. This was often caused by solid particles becoming lodged in the packing, which would have to be replaced every couple of days, typically taking between four to five hours, and the plungers would only last three to four months.
Hydra-Cell Pro seal-less pumps solved these problems, handling a range of corrosive chemicals and liquids with high solids with greater reliability and vastly reduced maintenance, lowering operating expenses amounting to millions of dollars per year. Wanner supplies the company with over 100 RO pumps a year, handling effluent and industrial waste.
A versatile mobile membrane filtration pilot plant developed by hygienic fabrication specialist Axium Process is helping customers run process evaluation trials across a wide spectrum of membrane technology. It enables trials to be carried out (on customer sites or at Axium’s Swansea, Wales facility) on process and waste stream applications using microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membrane technologies.
To meet these requirements, the company chose Wanner Hydra-Cell seal-less pumps. Hydra-Cell Pro provides a positive flow but operate at a range of pressures (15 to 60 bar) by using a variable speed drive or inverter, enabling Axium to run tests under different conditions for a variety of customer trials.
The Hydra-Cell offers smooth delivery and low pulsation, with the pumping action achieved through the sequential flexing of three hydraulically balanced diaphragms. The diaphragms also isolate liquid media from the drive end of the pump, allowing it to handle many different types of hot or cold liquid including acids, caustics, thin non-lubricants, slurries and liquids containing abrasive solids.
APATEQ engineers and manufactures custom-designed compact wastewater treatment plants and pre-treatment systems for industrial wastewaters. For a landfill water treatment system facility, APATEQ installed Wanner Hydra-Cell Pro ultra-high-pressure RO process pumps to provide Ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO) to filter and transition contaminated wastewater and landfill leachate to water of drinking-quality standard. This water can be safely used for irrigation of crops or just safely released into rivers.
High concentrations of particles, salts like potassium, chloride and ammonia, and organic materials within the leachate can damage many types of pumps which have dynamic seals and packing. Hydra-Cell Pro pumps can reliably handle liquids containing particles from 0.1 to 800 microns and more abrasives with less wear than on axial piston or plunger pumps. The seal-less design of the pumps enables reliable handling of the process liquids, eliminating unplanned downtime and reducing maintenance costs associated with the need to replace expensive seals and packing. It also ensures 100% leak-free operation and safety for operators and for the environment, as there is no risk of hazardous liquids leaking from the pumps.
The facility required three pumps for use within five RO stages for processing leachate, the first of which was ultrafiltration. The ultrafiltration pre-treatment removes nearly all suspended solids and microorganisms from the contaminated water. Following that is three-stage RO used to treat the UF permeate, which removes the rest of the dissolved salts and other organic solubles. The effluent water is purified enough to achieve drinking water quality at this point. Additionally high-pressure RO systems are used to reduce the volume of the first RO stage brine flow.
