Simple build and a design with no dynamic seals give Hydra-Cell Pro pumps big advantages in many mining, quarrying and tunneling applications.
Pumps used for drill head cooling and for dust suppression duties, above or below ground, are operating in difficult, dusty conditions. Feed water can often contain particles that will damage pumps with dynamic seals, and quickly block fine filters. The seal-less design of the Hydra-Cell Pro pump, which does not need fine filtration, avoids these problems – handling grey water without difficulty. The same design feature enables Hydra-Cell Pro pumps to handle other abrasives – for example the latex solutions sprayed over coal to seal and confine coal dust.
Hydra-Cell Pro's high pressure capability and low pulsation make the pumps ideal for seal-flushing, preventing early failure of the high-volume centrifugal pumps that commonly handle slurry and ground water in mines. Physically compact and energy efficient, using relatively small motors, Hydra-Cell Pro pumps fit readily into mobile mining or quarrying machinery.

A mining company in Colorado, USA chose Hydra-Cell Pro H-25 pumps for an environmentally sensitive pumping operation that required a safe and reliable injection system for gold metal recovery. Hydra-Cell Pro’s seal-less technology was a great advantage for a mining operation that regarded environmental concerns as a top priority. Previous seal failures had resulted in dangerous emissions, time consuming repairs and the loss of production.
For this application, a solution consisting of 71% water, 25% cyanide and 4% caustic was to be delivered precisely into a high volume water stream. The resulting 2% cyanide solution was then pumped over layers of crushed ore, allowing the gold metal in the ore to leach into solution and be collected for further processing.
The cyanide is re-concentrated and re-used. The H-25 pump is able to handle the reclaimed concentrate and meter it accurately into the water stream. Controlled by a variable frequency drive, the pump matches any required delivery between – in this case – 2 gpm and 10 gpm at 290 psi (8 l/min and 38 l/min at 20 bar).
The operation has proved safe, accurate and reliable. Two of these systems are now on site and the mining facility is looking to apply Hydra-Cell Pro seal-less technology in other environmentally sensitive applications.
Hydra-Cell Pro pumps are commonly found on seal water flush applications in the mining industry. Removing ground water is a continuous problem. Most mines use large centrifugal pumps to pump it out. Almost 90% of these pumps incorporate packings and 10% use mechanical seals. Since the slurries being pumped are abrasive, the packing can wear out relatively quickly without a reliable seal flush system.
The small pumps used to deliver clean water to the seal area of a centrifugal pump must operate at a pressure high enough to overcome pressure inside the stuffing box. When a mine is new, this pressure may be relatively low. But the deeper the mine or the further the dirty water and sludge must be pumped, the higher the required operating pressure of the large multi-stage centrifugal pumps. Pressure in the stuffing box can exceed 600 psi (40 bar).
Seal flushing is a critical operation, but the conventional piston or plunger pumps sometimes used to deliver clean water for seal flushing, are not always able to do so effectively. Mine engineers in the US and elsewhere have reported two particular problems – pulsation and seal wear. Free from these limitations, the Hydra-Cell seal-less pump has increasingly been preferred for seal flushing.
In a copper mining application, after the mineral has been extracted the residual material or tailings are mixed with water and conveyed to a centrifugal separator. Large centrifugal pumps made for handling slurries take the slurry from the separator and deliver it to evaporative ponds that can be several miles away. As time goes on, new ponds are dug progressively further from the mine site and the hydraulic pressure needed to move the heavy and abrasive slurry increases to 600 psi and beyond. Consistent, reliable seal cleaning is essential in these circumstances to avoid costly slurry pump failures. Hydra-Cell Pro pumps have proved themselves fully equal to the task.
